April Showers Bring May Flowers!

Can you believe that it’s already May? We are almost halfway through 2017 already, and the weather is starting to heat up here in Arizona. School is almost out for the summer, and we are all dreaming of barbecues, swimming, and monsoon season!

With the temperatures warming up, here are some quick safety reminders to keep you and your family safe this summer:

  1. Never leave ANYONE in a parked car, INCLUDING pets!! Car temperatures reach over 125* here in Arizona, which can mean serious injury and even death.
  2. Never leave your child unattended around water. Accidents can happen in just a few short seconds, and we want to make sure everyone has fun while still being super safe.
  3. Don’t lean up against walls or lay on concrete that has been in the sun all day. This sounds funny, but we have had firsthand reports of second-degree burns just from the sun-warmed concrete!

Also, with school out, remember to schedule regular dental checkups! We offer special scheduling so that your whole family can come in at one time- saving you multiple trips to the dental office. Call us today!

Keep Those Teeth Safe!

Every soldier knows that you don’t go into battle unarmed or unprepared. Everything must be properly protected and safeguarded, since there is only one of you!

Why then, would you not protect your mouth in the same way?

Your mouth is an amazing gift! Without it, you couldn’t talk, eat, breathe, kiss, or anything else! That’s why keeping it healthy and safe is vital to your overall happiness.

With the Summer quickly approaching, here are 3 ways to protect your mouth:

  1. Wear a mouthguard when playing sports! Keep your teeth safe and intact by remembering to always wear a mouthguard, particularly when playing contact sports like football or rugby.
  2. Schedule your 6-month checkup with your dentist! We offer convenient appointments before and after work and on Saturday in order to better serve you. Your hygienist will be able to catch any hard-to-reach spots in your mouth and give you brushing and flossing tips.
  3. Brush and floss twice a day! Summer vacation means later nights, barbecues, and plenty of popsicles and ice cream. Keep your teeth safe from cavity-causing bacteria by keeping your teeth and gums nice and clean.

Is That Normal?

Let’s be honest- the human body does all sorts of weird things. But, it is important to know when something is “weird-but-normal” and when something is definitely not healthy. One of the most common myths is that you can expect your gums to bleed.

Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT normal for your gums to bleed after brushing or flossing! It is a sign that your gums are weakened by bacteria, and if left untreated, will lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease.

How do you stop the bleeding? Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably after every meal. Floss your teeth once a day, taking care to get around the top of the tooth. Be gentle at first; your gums will likely be tender, but the tenderness will go away after a few days if you are consistent. A fluoride mouth wash will also help remove any remaining bacteria!

Additionally, regular checkups with your dentist will ensure your teeth are being taken care of!

5 Uses for a Toothbrush (they’re not just for brushing your teeth!)

When it comes to toothbrushes, our number one use for them is keeping our mouths clean.

But sometimes it seems that there are more toothbrushes in the house than people, and you may not want to throw them away just yet!

Here are 5 of our favorite ways to use old toothbrushes:

  1. Toothbrushes are great for cleaning jewelry- the small bristles are perfect for fine details like filigree.
  2. Keep one handy when washing your bike chain; it saves your hands from getting greasy!
  3. For hard to reach spots, they are perfect for any housecleaning project.
  4. Use a toothbrush to apply the color for hair highlights in when coloring your hair.
  5. Dirty shoes? Use a toothbrush to scrub the rubber lining the bottom of your shoe!

Marching Into March!

It always seems that February flies by- almost like we are cut short two days at the end of the month.

Here at CV Dental Care, we are looking forward to the arrival of two miniature team members this month. Dr. Standage, one of our Canyon Vista Doctors, and his wife are expecting a baby any day now! Our HR manager, Johnna is also eagerly awaiting a brand new bundle of joy!

We also have a new doctor joining our team! Dr. Kim will be taking care of patients at our Canyon Vista and Copper Vista locations. We will introduce him in next week’s blog post!

Why Tap Water?

The 2017 theme for National Children’s Dental Health Month is “Choose Tap Water For a Sparkling Smile.”

What’s the big deal about tap water?

Have you ever compared a child to a hummingbird? They seem to be drawn to sugary, sweet drinks whenever they get thirsty. But the fact of the matter is, although those drinks taste delicious, they are not doing a child’s developing teeth any favors. The extra sugars linger in the mouth, which means cavities can develop faster.

The best thing for a child (and adult!) to drink is tap water. Water is hydrating, stain-free, and sugar free! It doesn’t introduce any extra bacteria to the mouth, and can even contain fluoride, which helps protect the teeth from cavities.

Make the smart choice for your teeth: Drink Water!

Fun Facts about NCDHM!

Did you know that…..?

National Children’s Dental Health observances began with a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio and a one-week event in Akron, Ohio during February 1941.

Since then, the concept has grown from a two-city event into a nationwide program. The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. The single day observance became a weeklong event in 1955. And in 1981, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

(Thanks to the American Dental Association for these facts!)
